It doesn’t have a lot of functionality, but is a fairly accurate general location map.. Data is current as of February 6, 2025, and was taken from the new member introduction thread. Errors/omissions—Sorry about that. Reply here if you want your data corrected/edited/added/deleted.

Thanks to Ancient Dad and the other staff, sponsors and contributors to this site. What a resource!

AD Edit: @shortordercook volunteered to do this after asking if we had a member map. Many will remember the sortable member list we used to have while at HT, until the change to Xenforo software which does not have that option though it does have a list (just not sortable). As I explained further below in a comment, no new information was gathered for him to compile this list, only what the members shown in it had already provided during registration.

Interesting. Wasn't aware of so many members around me in DFW. LOL - just realized it's because I just put "Texas" - it's actually Plano, TX

spooky data can be scraped
But this data is not scraped, it's assembled using only the information members provided during registration. We currently don't know any more about our members than any member has told us while registering to join VHT, and if you use a computer to view the forum you can see every member's given location in their mini-profile to the left of every post they make. It's only on mobile where that information isn't immediately visible.

Sorry if the comment came off as if I was suggesting something nefarious is happening. Let's change the word scrape to collect. I dabbled in coding and at one point had wanted to write some code to collect data from public sites.

You should see the stuff that is really scraped - yikes. Every time we have a data vendor come in with their presentations I want to throw my phone in a river and start with carrier pigeons

No worries, I just wanted to be sure you were aware that isn't something we do here.

It's so easy now to translate things. I have a person I communicate with in Spanish, and it's easy to just open www.chatgpt.com, type in "translate this to South American Spanish:" and then write what I want in English, hit Enter and there it is in Spanish. Copy, paste, send, done.

Copiar, pegar, enviar, listo."

Sure! Here's the translation to Dutch:

"Het is nu zo gemakkelijk om dingen te vertalen. Ik heb een persoon waarmee ik in het Spaans communiceer, en het is gemakkelijk om gewoon www.chatgpt.com te openen, 'vertaal dit naar Zuid-Amerikaans Spaans:' in te typen, vervolgens te schrijven wat ik wil in het Engels, op Enter te drukken en daar is het in het Spaans. Kopiëren, plakken, versturen, klaar."

Well an interesting project with less than 100 Canadian members. So not the typical 10 -1 ratio of US vs Canada in most other metrics. Ontario has about 25 members which again is lower metric wise, given our population density and other typical representatives of around a 34% ratio vs rest of Canada.

Still thanks for who did the work on this item. (y)

I'm curious, in what way do you mean?

The concentration of members is the highest in countries where English is the main language, and outside the US, that would be the UK.

Yes, easy, but not everything that is easy is obvious and is acted upon.

I can see how one could view it as a barrier based on the most-used language of the forum being English. I joined a German 450 forum a few years ago and got a lukewarm reception and very little comments, perhaps because I was posting in English.

Yes, recognizable, most Germans, and especially older people like us, or not speaking English at all. But the new generations do speak English, but are not interested in old Honda's :ROFLMAO:

A very interesting concentration of pins in Northern Saskatchewan. Would I be correct in assuming that when somebody simply lists their location in Canada, the pin is randomly assigned to a location somewhere close to the centre of the country?

Also, is there a way to view pins that are beneath others?

Thanks for this undertaking.

@shortordercook put a LOT of time into this, it came together over a few weeks and he assigned locations based on the information provided by the member (city name, zip code or simply country name if that was all the member offered). The closer you zoom the map in, the more the pins separate, but when there is more than one member in the same area either by name or other location info, then they do appear stacked so he has slightly moved a few of them recently so others would be visible.

I can only imagine and I hope my comments didn't come across as being critical at all as that certainly wasn't intended. I think its fantastic and was simply curious how the mapping worked as all of the members in the middle of nowhere in Saskatchewan seemed like an anomaly that must have a logical explanation.

Not at all, I was curious about it myself and asked him many questions along the way.

I think the more vague locations given by many members rightfully concerned about privacy is where some of that comes from. He has kindly adjusted those who have pointed out more accurate information for their pins, and has agreed to update it as information is available. It is definitely cool to get a visual on where our members are around the globe.

Out of simple curiosity I would love to know if a member simply designates their location as "Canada" (which of course is a pretty big place) does the map simple drop the pin somewhere in the middle of "Canada"?

It's a great question and one I'm sure @shortordercook could easily answer. I have yet to work with it myself so I don't know exactly how that part works.

Yes, I think so, looking at Belgium. Four members, all in the same place, and everyone gave Belgium as the place they live (if you don't know where Belgium is, it's located just below the Netherlands).

Yessir, that's what happens. I think that the center of that cluster in Saskatchewan may be the "center" of Canada, or at least where Google map defaults to.

Google also stacks markers on top of each other in cases like that, and they remain unviewable except for the one that is on the top of the stack. As I browse through, or when someone points out what appears to be missing data, i've been spreading them out manually to make them viewable.

If anyone uses Google maps a lot and doesn't know how to get the member map locations to turn off, I just spent a few minutes looking at that.
The solution is to press the 'map layers' button, scroll down to the member map layer in the list that pops up, on mine it was atvthe bottom, and press it. It'll disappear and that's it, done.

This map is fantastic. Thanks to all who created it.

If you could put me in Grand Rapids Michigan, Thanks !
I'm sure next time @shortordercook is here he will update it for you.

With over 4000 total members world wide now, even the most recently active list is pretty interesting. We're averaging about 25 or so new members a week in recent months and at that rate the map will have even more members on top of members in the heavily populated areas.
