I've been looking for spare parts to stockpile for a rainy day, and I came across a decent engine from a 1973 CB350. Does anyone know how compatible would it be with my 1971 CB350? Either as a complete swap, or as something I can pull parts from as needed to fix my engine?

Identical engine in every way, only difference is the carbs.
What I probably should have asked you in the first place is, when looking for an engine that's identical to my 1971 CB350, what years can I get? If '73 is identical, then I would assume '72 is as well, but are there other years too?

The K series is more important than the year of these older bikes. Back when they were new, the standardized VIN was not yet in use on bikes and a '72 that didn't sell became a '73 the next year when it was sold (or after September 1) and sometimes 2 years later in less often cases. And the frame or engine number is used by Honda for superceded part numbers too, with Honda making improvements during a model year instead of waiting until the end. So, if you have a CB350K3 you'd want to look for a K3 engine so the engine number would be in that series.

These are from a link in the Welcome Package, if you haven't looked through the links in it you should take a few minutes to do so. These are all the entries for the CB350 from K0 to the disc-braked G model at the end of the run.

I would focus on the engine number which would read as CB or CL 350E-########
You want to stick with the beginning number of 3 for K3, 4 for K4 or 5 for K5 since those will have the later cams, upgraded kick starter ass'y and cam chain tensioner.

That's great because now I don't need to know what bike the engine came off of. I just need to check the engine number. Thanks! And sorry I missed that in the welcome package, but thank you for pointing me to it.

If I'm understanding you correctly, since my bike is a CB350K3, not only can I look for any engine that starts with CB350E-3#######, but I can also look for any engine from a CL350 that starts with the engine number CL350E-3#######? That would be great.

Correct, exactly the same engine with a different prefix.
