3D Printing Side covers

Well boogers. I've been learning about this stuff watching your progress.
Is it possible to make a buck mold to print on top of? A quick mold could be done using expanding foam, the inside of the cover would need to be saran wrapped to prevent adhesion of the foam.

no, 3d printers are linear, layer by layer so you cant have anything blocking it. you would need to program the print head around the mold. i think upside down and flat would work best. i'll try it again at some point.

How about printing in sections and gluing together. I work in an engineering shop, we use this technique frequently.

Hey Dougrun, I've been looking at 3d printing some replacement covers, are you willing to share the 3d print files?

I did have to pay to have them designed so a donation would be nice. or you can buy them here: https://www.phototiming.com/shop/index.php?rt=product/product&product_id=12

no guarantees on the files working for you but you get the blender 3d file too as well as every version of my attempts.
3d printing has come a long way so I like my odds. Hugely appreciate it man, I'm more than happy to pay for the files. It's worth a shot if I can print replacements instead of hunting for the elusive right side cover.

Hey man, would there be any way you have a file for just the longer tab towards the back? I have a set that I bought that came without the longer tab in the back of the right side cover, was hoping you would be able to get me a file to print and new tab out so I can modify it onto my cover. If you can that’ll be greatly appreciated!!

sorry, my editing skills do not allow just saving that tab. not hard to make one. 20220322_155802.jpg

Well @dougrun , I just bumped into this thread. Good try at 3D printing this side cover, it's sad it wasn't a easy success. That doesn't surprise me too much as I was thinking these side covers would be a challenging thing to print - so big, so many curves with no flat surfaces. It is slightly bigger than my ender 3 bed, so maybe standing tall might work. Printing it in a few pieces might be another. Trying to do the cad work to model this would take a large effort. The supports needed look like a pain. It probably take a day on my slow ender to print - that would probably bomb out 3/4th the way thru.

That got me thinking, maybe it could be farmed out to print. I guess the price would have to be affordable. You would need a model known to work or be printable. It is cool you can buy this model for $50, it would be interest to see how usable it is. Like does it come with raw mesh STL output file, or the design source file(like freecad file, or blender file). Even with those source files it's still way too challenging to operate these programs. I struggle with freecad, blender I open up, but really don't want to spend many hours learning how to use.

There was just a post by @Garagista, here:
where someone is selling new build plastic side covers for a very reasonable price(like $35). I learned from the ebay link he was local to my area. Sent them an email asking a few things and offering my side covers if he had any interest in creating those. Just guessing they are 3D printed. Have not heard back from him.

We have @esmith250624 getting creative with some plastic cases in this thread:

My CM450 was lacking the right side cover, I got creative and used my CM400 to make a paper machi mold and created one from that using hot glue, bailing wire, etc. That came out OK, I should probably work on it's finish, but it was a ton of time and effort so can't be easily reproduced. That's what would be nice about 3D printing, hopefully it's all automatic and you wake up and have one the next morning.
Some posts of that that I located in my thread over here:

Someone else made one out of wood, he posted results on this forum, I don't have a link.

Maybe someday we will have easily 3D printed CM400/CM450 right(and left) side covers.

@kbongos : I'll update once the side panels have arrived and see if they are a good fit!

The files on my site come with the blender files and all attempted STL's by me. My Geeetech A30 Pro printer has a large plate but given the time, supports, temps in my living room, and material needed, i just gave up on it after paying for the model to be made.

Maier Plastics is willing to make these cm 400 450 side covers BUT they need a good pair to mold

Anyone want to send theirs to Maeir Plastics out west ?

I know the focus here are CM400 covers, but in regards to 3D printed side covers in general there are some for the CB160 on eBay. They look pretty good/accurate- it's a shame the seller doesn't have a larger printer to get these done in one piece...

I would like to think with how smart bambu printers are now that they'd be able to handle the supports issue. Just need a good scan of mine for a cb125s and i'd like to try it
