The previous owner stuck the gearbox/oil pump cover and drive cover back on with some sort of instant gasket. I want to remove this stuff & replace with proper paper gaskets which I have. The problem is that some of the cross head screws will not come out even after warming the engine up & using an impact driver. Some of the crosshead screws have become "chewed up" in my efforts to get them out. I intend to replace them all with "Allen" bolts when I can get them out. Any suggestions apart from carefully drilling off the heads when I can hopefully get at the stud remaining and get them out with heat ( very hot hair dryer, no flames) and mole grips. Anyone had this problem and is there a better solution. Any help appreciated.

Moved to SOHC Twins Engine section, the Technical Stuff section is for Manuals, Wiring Diagrams, Tips and Tricks, etc. as mentioned in the forum description.

As to your situation, if the heads of the JIS screws (they are not phillips heads in case you weren't aware, JIS is different) are bad enough that a good quality JIS screwdriver or impact driver won't remove them, drilling off the heads is often the next step.

IMG_3699.JPGIMG_3699.JPGManaged to get gearbox casing off & oil pump filter very clean, replaced JIS screws with metric Allen bolts. Checked tappets and found almost no clearance on left side inlet tappet. All adjusted to 2 thou as per handbook. Am getting a new sponge filter for air filter but strange metal clip with plastic covered end found in filter box. I've no idea what it is for! Any suggestions appreciated.

It's to hold the original filter in place against the outlet of the airbox, #4 here
