1978 CB400T II project

Light Blue and Orange have two bullet connectors per colour. Your red from the turn signals has to split off to both light blue and both orange bullet connectors respectively.

One is for the power the other is for the turn signal indicator bulb.

I'm sorry. I'm not understanding. I get that the green and black wires are ground and power but the extra light blue and orange wires go to different connections. They are all currently (3wires a signal) connected to the same bulb. Im guessing that I have to connect the power and orange wire together? And light blue and power together on the other side?
The other filament of the front turn signal bulbs is for running lights, they are connected to the headlight circuit and they're supposed to be on with the headlight. The side that goes to a blinking turn signal when selected at the left switch disconnects the running light while the turn signal section of the bulb is on/flashing, then reconnects to the running light filament when the turn signal is turned off.

So,yes. Combine blue and red together to my power wire on the new turn signal, ground is connected to ground wire on new turn signal. Combine orange and red together to my power wire on the new turn signal, ground is connected to ground wire on new turn signal. Right? I'm sorry for asking you all to talk to me like an idiot but that is how I understand the best.

Ah yeah, I'm an idiot. Forgot these had running lights on the front.

Well I got them both to blink appropriately but I no longer have the running lights. I tried a few variations and no matter what I do...just blinker no solid running light with the key in the on position and the headlight burning.

Decision time, blinkers or running lights. Can't have both with single element bulbs.

I have 2 element bulbs. I used the ones that came with the lights and another set from the dual element bulbs that came out of the lights I am replacing. This is a bummer. Looks like I'm riding with lights out. Thanks for the help everyone. As always, I appreciate it.

Stay safe.

Good evening everyone. I was wondering if anyone has a grab bar on their Hawk and they could explain the wire routing.

I understand putting the turn signals in their respective loops and running the wire along the underside of the bar towards the seat. Im confused at the middle tapered insert...do I feed wires from the bottom up and in or do they serve another purpose. If so, what kind of bolt would be used to keep it in place. Im assuming there has to be a bolt there because that would only leave the front bracket bolted to the frame and I don't feel like that would be enough. I have looked around and I've gotten varying answers. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Ride safe.

Thanks. That is bolted directly to the frame and not the shocks, correct? What kind of bolt did you use for the middle (tapered) hole?

Awesome. Thank you all so much. It has been a wild learning experience and I am so thankful that you guys are willing to help. I appreciate all the time and effort you put into helping us all. I'll have an update soon with the few things I have parts and plans for. Then you will hear about my crazy ripping everything open plan. Again, thank you.

Ride safe.

Picture update and speedometer question.

Things have been moving along pretty well. I've done some cleaning and painting. A few more parts have been added. Replaced petcock, bulbs, added rear pegs, made a tool kit, scrubbed, cleaned, oiled etc... Fixed the turn signals and headlight (pain in the butt to adjust the headlight where it is to shine properly...still tweaking that. Looking forward to this winter to replace some seals and change the gear ratio...i want to ride as much as I can this summer before I do that.

That being said:
Speedometer stopped working.
Tested and purchased new cable..both work.
Tested Speedometer..working
Only thing left has to be this...

this "pin", that the cable attaches to doesn't spin when the bike is raised and the front wheel is spun. I think this is my issue.

What do I do? I've looked through manuals and parts lists to no avail. Could someone give me a suggestion?

As always, I appreciate your help.1000005903.jpg

It looks like a different rotor on the front and also the dual caliper is not original. I assume this means you had the front wheel off? If yes, then you probably did not line up the tabs properly for the speedo drive.

Yeah, looks like the caliper and rotor were swapped. Better braking.

Thanks for the replies.

The wheel had been off... months ago when I got new tires. The speedometer has worked perfectly for months..one day it just stopped registering in the middle of a ride.

I also just noticed the wire guide for the speedometer is missing. It's not supposed to route through the front brake bracket. That hole in the fender is where the wire guide goes.

You'll have to pull the wheel off and see what's going on. Probably those tabs. Maybe they were in just enough to kind of work and finally gave out. I don't know. However, I do have a spare drive if you end up needing it.

I do not have the correct grommet to move the speedometer yet. It's on the list.
The grommets are still available from Honda and proper cable routing IS important and can cause things like cables to not work properly or break. At the very least zip tie it through that hole for now.

There's a few other things that stand out that need attention:
  • The spark plug wires are WAY too long on. Is this an aftermarket ignition coil? If yes, you need to trim them back. They look like they're resting on the fins or close to it.
  • What is going on with the dual fuel line or is it wrapped that much to get it to work? If it is one long hose you need to fix that. I see automotive clamps. Are you using 1/4" fuel line and automotive clamps? This tends to cause problems later. Get the 5.5mm from the dealer and the proper clips.
  • Beware that aftermarket headlamp. I've had to make ground eyelets to work with that specific headlight bracket because it was causing intermittent problems on a bike for soemone.
It's good overall, but these are some final touches you'll want to do and they're easy to accomplish. If you don't do something about them it will cause reliability issues later.
