1972 CB450 K5 Hot Mess

Kinda running on a time crunch again gotta spray the clear before pollen season otherwise I will have a clear coat with a yellow tinge.
We've had pine pollen in the air here for the last few weeks, so it must be later there because you're further north.

Wet sanding the color doesn't really take that much time to do and it doesn't require any additional cure time — not sure if you're implying that you don't have time for it. I would think an hour or two could be enough.

I use a little squeeze spray bottle with water, micro fiber towels to wipe off, and the wet or dry paper in 600/1000/1500 grit. If you clean the paper frequently, you won't go through that much of it doing the tank and covers. Lots of colored water runs off, so you want to do this in a place where that isn't going to be a problem.

I was thinking I need to let the paint dry/cure completely before wet sanding which from what I have read means you need to wait about a week or until you can no longer smell the paint fumes coming off the paint. I can still smell the fumes and I sprayed tank on Thursday so probably need to wait until Wednesday or Thursday. As I have mentioned before patience is not one of my virtues. I do have a number of chores on my list which is interfering with the important stuff like motorcycles but as they say "Happy wife happy life." :)

I don't wait that long to wet sand the color. I only wait as long as the can says until the piece can be handled, if that. In practice, that's an hour or so for me depending on the temperature outside. The wet sanding shouldn't affect the amount of time you wait between color and clear.

The clear coat should be allowed to harden before wet sanding, but that's fine because you're done spraying at that point.

I've been known to rush paint, so I'm open to revision of my current practices if anyone has other advice.

Here are some of the BMW R75 parts I sprayed. I have 2 coats of clear over the base to protect the finish while I apply the tape stripes the customer supplied. The another 3-4 coats of clear to seal in the stripes.20260319_155501.jpg

Great to see it out in the sun with matching color parts, nice. It's looking really good, get some pipes on it, maybe a wet sand and another coat of clear and it'll be Sunday morning bike hangout-ready! Great to see you getting it to the finish line.

Looks good at 10 feet so I think it is as good as it is going to get for the riding season as far as the paint job. I am keeping my eye out for an appropriate set of mufflers though.

The wife and I met my daughter and her husband at Cycle Gear in Raleigh and they helped me pick out a new helmet, Arai Regent-X Helmet. They made a sizeable contribution to cost which helped my reluctance to spend that much on my worn out head then my wife got the Packtalk Pro intercom system to go with it. She really liked the crash detection auto 911 call features although I am not sure what that says about her confidence in me. My daughter and her husband have the Cardo systems so will be nice when we ride together.

Matching color of course. Supposed to be here tomorrow and I will post a review on fit and ride review. The helmet I tried on at the store was super light and felt great which also helped the decision.

Hey, you know how I feel about red... looks sweet! But yeah, Arais are great helmets but pricey.

Getting close for sure but I definitely want to get a few miles on her locally before any longer distance rides.

I realized I missed a few things along the way, so I was looking back to check out some of those things.
  • The NOS rear fender was a great purchase, as was the 500T front fender.
  • The frame looks really good. I found the post, but it didn't mention what you used. Do you recall? Was it a paint with hardener?
I still have more to review on another day.

Yes the rear fender was a real find at the price and I just checked and Northeast Vintage Cycle still has one available if you use the superseded part number 80100-457-670XW for K6 and K7 and the price is more than fair especially if you look up what CMSNL was asking if they had one! It's kinda crazy on the 500T front fender that there are a few nice ones available at reasonable prices as well.

I really don't remember what brand primer and paint I used on the frame, may have been high temp but not sure. Hopefully it will hold up.

Bike looks great Rob, get out there and enjoy the fruits of all your labor! 👍
I think it looks pretty spiffy myself and is running great (at the moment) but I certainly can't take all the credit. It would not have been possible without the help and generosity of the members of this forum with parts, advice and encouragement!

I think I am going to call this thread done with this post but I will start new threads to provide updates. Took a morning ride and my lovely wife took a video of my leaving the house with commentary of course. Again I can't say how much I have appreciated everyone's support and help with this project!

Bike sounds really good riding away, congrats Rob. Well done.

It all looks good! Great sounding bike, smooth acceleration, nice home, good weather today, and most importantly, a loving spouse - you are a very lucky man!

Excellent job, Rob! It is no longer a "Hot Mess'. I hope you get your charging issues sorted out.

This has motivated me to continue where I left off with my paint job. Gonna wake up early and start sanding in the morning. Of course, it's gonna rain tomorrow  So no painting.

I am looking forward to seeing it when you get done. This was really the first time I had tried for a nice paint job. It turned out well enough that I am not ashamed to be seen on it and I learned a lot that will help if and when I try round two. I have to say I was very impressed with the Spray Max 2K Clear Glamor but a word of caution use it up right away. It says you can use up to 48 hours after mixing but you can get stringy globs if you wait that long.

I am thinking of pulling the engine from the S90 and doing a full tear down and rebuild on it this winter so I may try to freshen up the paint and repaint the fenders the stock silver. Gotta have something to do. :)
