I've just bought a CD175 engine, complete apart from the carb. Hopefully will collect it next week, only 20 miles away. Engine is described as being in good condition, low mileage etc. I bought it as a source of spare parts, but it would be nice to hear it running, so I wondered if anyone could suggest a suitable aftermarket carb for it, as original CD175 carbs seem to be rather thin on the ground.

If you cant find a carb, just stick a hose into the top of a jar with a little bit of petrol in it and feed it into the intake .... I have run engines on fumes before ...

Thanks, yes, I've been looking at those 'Keihin PW22' carbs on Ebay, but that Amazon one is even cheaper. I think I already have one in a box up in the loft but couldn't find it this morning, sure that engine would at least start up and run with one of those.

Oddly enough, I did try offering up a CB carb. With the extended CB manifold fitted, the mounting studs line up but the carb is rotated sideways by 45 degrees or so. I haven't tried the carb on it's own, not sure that the venturi lines up correctly. CB carbs are nominally 20mm as opposed to CD 22mm. Worth a try though.

Test fit on engine.

They actually have the nerve to put Keihin Japan on the casting? Looks like you switched out the float bowl, so did that line up correctly on the body? Do they also stamp the jets Keihin too?

No, that's the float bowl that it came with. Fitted with three cross head screws rather than a quick release clip, but looks as though it will be leak proof, 'O' ring in groove on mating surfaces. Jets are not marked, neither for brand or size. Leakproof plastic float and viton tipped float needle.

Agreed, very cheeky to use the Keihin logo, the cloned 175 carbs I've used at least had the decency not to do that. That said, there's loads of Mikuni knock offs out there, complete with Mikuni logo, so called 'Chikuni's'.

LOL Chikuni's. I've heard that these knock off carbs actually work quite well and are a good option, since a NOS part is long gone, or crazy expensive if still available. So at least you have an option. Clearly no fear on getting sued by Keihin in China.
