    Manual piston ring file

I need to set the gap on a set of new rings. Can anyone recommend a good (functional but inexpensive) manual ring filer? I see them in a wide range of prices from $25 on up, and being sold everywhere from Amazon, eBay, JEGS, Summit...etc. It's something I've never done but seems like a worthy skill to have.

Dave, I've always just used a thin flat file clamped in the vise and carefully filed the ends by holding the ring on either side of the gap and gently moving one end up and down over the file while checking the results often. I've not done it often enough to worry about looking for one specific to the job.

A cheap set of "jeweler's files" from Harbour Freight contains a good file for this......

Looks like a small file is the ticket! Thank you!

Just be very cautious and go slowly, they can change a few thousandths in a hurry.

I use a diamond disc for a dremel tool clamped in a vise and do both sides at once which keeps then square to each other. I also drag the front edges slightly as they get very sharp and can score the cylinder when doing a gap check.
