Got pulled over last night less than a mile from leaving my house for no headlight. Officer was cool, I told him it was on when I left a few minutes ago, and he escorted me home. Today I find one of the two filaments is gone. So why then don't I have high beam either? The high beam indicator comes on, but no head light on either position.

Any reason I couldn't put the 60/55w bulb in it that the Rebel 450 uses vs. the 35/50w that is stock on my bike?

The high beam indicator On shows that power is going to the headlight but since it's a separate circuit that's all it means. Sounds like a possible bad ground.
No reason not to use a higher output bulb, charging system and wiring will handle it.

I measure voltage from the green wire ground pin of the socket to either the white or black, depending on where the switch is, so yes there is power getting there. I just checked, and both filaments show very high resistances, 12 and 15 MOhms respectively, so I guess they are both shot. One is broken off, the other I can't really tell.

Would the higher wattage bulb in the Rebel fit my bike would you think?

edit: I see it is a different halogen set up. Too much trouble, I'll stay stock. It was good enough.
