My speedometer got jumpy and had slipping cable noise. So I disconnected, took off and tried my hand at disassembly. Comes off fairly easy with removal of 2 nuts. Now I had to open it up and it has this chrome pressed on ring. I spent a lot of time carefully trying to pry the lip loose all around the backside. would have been easier to maybe cut the chrome ring, but then fixing back on might be tricky. But got it apart and was able to get inside and saw to my horror the swiss like watch work obviously not easy or intended to take apart. So I just stared at it a long time and gave it a stern look, watched whatever you tubes I could find on the subject. It all looked clean and nothing obviously wrong, I squared off a wood dole to try and turn the input shaft. It didn't turn real easy and that made me think maybe that could be the problem. Taking it apart further looked rather difficult if not impossible without breaking something. I squared off a nail with a file to drive the input shaft and that seemed to work good, still sticky. So I just squirted a little penetrating oil on top side of input shaft holder, let it seep down toward where you plug the cable end in, that worked well to make it turn easy, hopefully solving the problem. We will see, I put it back together, although I only crimped the band back on slightly for now. I used a clamp around the band at end to protect the band somewhat, that is a tip I got from a you tube. The plastic turn knob pulled thru the hole in the case, no luck trying to pull the knob off. Here are pics.

Yeah, that ring can be a PITA but in cases where the needle has come off the shaft or is spinning around in circles like mine was, it's something you have to do (or buy a good used replacement). Lubing the drive input shaft with a very light oil has worked well for quite a few members, hopefully yours works out well.

Hey @ancientdad, Worked great! Woke up it was sunny, a bit chilly, had to go try it out. Makes me wonder if just shooting some penetrating oil up the drive shaft would have worked, avoided the hassle of taking it all apart. I had sprayed some foaming penetrating oil on top and let it seep down, but if the input shaft is open it could work.

Good to hear. The only concern is getting too much into the gauge internals and having it work its way onto the face inside.
