Interested in opinions on whether or not to oil the cylinder base gasket and head gasket during assembly. My manual suggests it to help create a more reliable seal but is it necessary? Does it really matter either way?

I've never thought wetting gaskets with something you're actually trying to seal in with them made any sense, so it's a no for me.
I have coated them in past without any problems but since I joined the forum I have to go with Jims experience.

I've heard of this before but here's no way I would ever do it.
Base gasket go on dry, maybe a touch of sealer around any oil pressure ports. Something like Gasga Cinch.
Head gaskets should go on dry as well, they are impregnated with graphite to allow expansion/contraction movement of the head on the cylinder. Adding anything negates that.
