    Obtaining a title in Oregon

Hello all. One of my first posts/questions to the group. Say someone(me) purchased two different motorcycles in the past ten years at two different times from two different parties both without titles. No real reason to believe either are stolen or “hot”. Both had just been sitting around separated from their paperwork. One came with a handwritten “bill of sale” releasing ownership but that has been lost in a move a couple years ago. An inquiry was made at the local DMV a couple years ago that was not particularly helpful. It was basically frowned upon that someone would purchase a bike sans a title. They were both EXTREMELY good deals at that time which is what lead to both purchases. Can anyone point me in a direction of how to go about obtaining these titles in Oregon?

Register them in Vermont first. Look up VT loophole. Then take the VT reg to your local DMV to get a registration AND title.

Thanks. I had heard of the Vermont loophole and actually just very recently watched a YouTube video on the subject. Was uncertain if it would work in Oregon but will give it a go!

I used Saint's Title. They are pro's. Legit, and an easy process. Everything you need answers to is on their website.

I know first hand that it works in WA and in ever so picky CA. Certainly it’ll work in Oregon and probably every other state as well.

And it is MUCH cheaper than going through a title service company.

My experience in California is that it's really not a problem at all. I have the seller sign a bill of sale with the Vin and engine numbers on it (if you're going to change the engine don't list the engine number). Then have the seller fill out their part of DMV form 227. Make an appointment at the DMV, go there with the forms and tell them the owner lost the title. If the machine isn't in the DMV records you have to have the VIN verified so either bring the bike with you when you go or tell them you want to file the paperwork and pay the fees so the penalties don't apply and that you'll come back when you round up a truck or trailer. You don't need an appointment for the VIN inspection, but they will not inspect it in a trailer or truck bed so bring along your ramps and maybe someone to help.

You act friendly, you smile and accept all the silly rules and forms as gospel, and you pay without *****ing. After a few weeks a title comes in the mail. I usually want them registered as Non-Operational so there are no registration fees.

If the bike has been registered and then people just stopped paying you can get whacked for some huge fees in California, unless it's been more than 10 years when the bike finally disappears from the system. There is a way to cancel the fees but that's for another thread.

Works in PA as well. Apparently it does not work in VA.

If someone wants some help filling the VT forms out send me a PM. It's pretty easy to do. I've done it for the CB550K and the DT250.
