Behold Project WTF??? Been working on this found-on-road-dead 74 CB 450 K7 for 2 years and today she passed the safety inspection! Thanks to all of you for your unbelievably helpful (and patient) advice. This newbie couldn't have done it without you. I have (yet another) question. Are the left and right side panel mounting bolts supposed to be a different size? And perhaps the most important question...whaddaya think? Is she a beauty or what??? :)IMG_1786.jpeg

As far as I know, the bolts (with screw head) that secure the sidecovers are the same left and right.

And yep, it's a beauty for sure.

Sorry..I'm talking about this thing. For whatever reason, I have this one and one that's shorter.MB.jpeg

Looking good, and I'm not even a fan of red.

It's weird looking at the parts fiche - it's labeled as Bolt Cleaner, R. for both sides - maybe R for rear? Same part number though

Thats the 'through-bolt' assembly which goes into the connector tube built into the frame which connects both air filters together;requires two.
The large hex section is where you screw the metal sidecover in on each side with the special large OEM flat blade Honda screw.

My parts book shows two different part numbers: 90110-292-010 left and 90112-292-000 right. They may be different lengths, but I haven't had mine off for years, so don't recall.

Bike looks sharp(y)

Nice job, looks good. I just measured those air filter bolts for my '71 CB450 and there is a 5mm difference (103mm and 108mm)

Good - which one's for the left?
I did a mock up of the install as I'm not there yet. To me the shorter one should be on the left. In the pics below you will see that both bolts are almost touching the lower battery case. If they were reversed with the longer bolt on the left, it would not tighten up without deforming the battery case. I think at one time they must have been over tightened on mine as the battery case is pushed in near those bolts.

The more you know...
If I have a need to pull them out again, I'll make sure to keep them oriented. Pretty sure that last time I had them out, it was one at a time, so I wouldn't have noticed.
Another data point for the forum.

Okay..so mine are very different. I think the one on the bottom is from a different model It secures the filter well but the panel screw itself doesn't reach the hex.IMG_1802.jpeg

I don't know what that bottom one is from, but it doesn't look like it's original. Or some PO got really creative with his mods for whatever reason.

My air filter bolts are the same as yours. The one on the left is for the left side.
Edit: I see that the top of one of your bolts is actually cut down, so not wxactly the same.

I checked my side cover bolts last night also and they are exactly the same as yours. The threaded bolt section is the same length on both parts. The difference is only in the hex part of the bolt. So it’s just a different stand off for the cover. I didn’t know they were different until I was reading this thread.

Update: her first ride was a C+. Got going nicely down a nice stretch of road..then stalled at the first stop sign. She would fire up and hold while I throttled but as soon as I released, she stalled and has been acting the same ever since. When I give it a little more throttle, I get a loud pop from the left side intake and again, will not hold an idle. Fuel take has lots of gas. Great spark. Any thoughts?

Inline fuel filter?

It sounds all the world like a fuel/air issue, or possibly under advanced?

It’s interesting you say fuel/air issue. The mixture screw on my carb rebuild kit has had zero effect on the idle (turn it in turn it out..nothing happens.) I’m currently looking for the proper screw and have had no luck.

Stock filters or pods?

I would say idle circuit as a start. And pods can block the port on the inlet side. As can a tiny piece of dirt.

But all the idle related things. Vacuum leaks, blocked idle circuit or jets, idle speed.

Even with the wrong mixture screw it should make some change when turned all the way in or out a few turns, seems like the passages aren't yet completely clean.

Stock filters. Carbs will come off (again) today and the party will begin!
