Carb repair CB400T

Also, I've checked to see if original mufflers are still available. There is a place in Canada that still carries the left side original muffler, but they no longer carry the right side. This is why I am putting the sportster slip-ons on the bike.

I now have the reducers, I found someone that could make them from stainless.
I have the brackets made and they look like they will work.
I am just waiting for the slip-on muffler clamps to arrive, probably Monday.

I found out that these slip-ons are actually catalytic converters.
Didn't know that.
I didn't either, but it must be the later versions because no one previously mentioned it and we've had members using them since before we started VHT.
 
Yes it does - excellent work, both pipes are equal height from the rear and the bike looks great.

That's all we can do Bob... find some humor in it and keep going. (y) I don't know about you, but things like this were contributing factors for me.

Yes, that is the contributing factor for me as well.
My frined and I went out and purchased matching Yamaha 175 enduros in the early 70's and we would go out every weekend to get dirty.
One weekend we found a path that led to a hill and we decided to go up in first and jump at the top.
we did this a few times then my friend sat down and watched me.
I decided to try it in fourth, and he said....
That when I left to top I went high enough to jump a garage, then inverted in air and came down head firt on top of a 6 foot diameter rock, then the bike came down on top of me.
I was a little funny that day.
I never claimed to be the brightest candle on the cake!

I love that T Shirt! I got hooked on motorbikes up at the abandoned apple orchard flying around with a friends dirt bike. I bent his handle bars on a wipe out, my brother flipped it with a little too much throttle. Good times. I can still hear that rat a tat tat.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite shirts.
I have many fond memories of that same sound.
Flyin around a track on a RM90 Suzuki, lots of fun.
Having a run on a bombardier 500 trial bike, super fast.
My brother in laws bultaco 250 pursang, what a machine, all spelling optional.
Having my hand freeze on the throttle of a Yamaha 360 enduro after many jumps.
Lots of good memories for sure.

I have another memory, well maybe it was a teaching moment more than a memory.
In the late 60's my brother had about 5 Bonneville’s, the last one was a 750.
I had a friend in high school that knew this, and he purchased a 450 Honda twin that year.
He asked me if I wanted to have a run, so I asked my brother, he said sure.
We lined up on the highway in front of the school, and let them go, when school was out.
I was shocked at just how much faster that 450 was than the 650 I was on.
I learned then and there that British bikes had had their day.

Yes, and when the CB750 did the same and more to all the Brit bikes including the 750 Trident, it was even more sad and apparent. The Norton Commando was about the only Brit bike capable of staying with the CB750. I used to love reading those Superbike shootout articles the bike magazines had back then.

well, I made an 850 P11 Norton from the engine in an 850 Interstate.
Had it balanced, ports the head, it was fast.
Had to tip the engine upright by 20 degrees, P11's were upright, commandos were not.
Chromalloy frame, less than 400 pounds in weight.
Dunstall exhaust and clutch. No battery, just a capacitor.
It was faster than a 750 Honda and a 750 Yamaha triple.
I had a lot of fun with that bike, and put a lot of miles on it.
A guy told me later that he used to wait until I left the plant just to hear it.

Just got back from a ride.
I forgot how cold your knees get when it's below 40.
I is running real well, it just doesn't seem to want to start right up after it has been sitting for a while.
Not sure why.

I thought that I would try the original sized primary and secondary jets in the bike.
The .70 & 1.10 primary and secondary.
so.........
I put them in this morning...........
rode around the block.........
Came back and put the .75 primary and 1.175 secondary jets back in.
Much better.
lesson learned!

Yeah, I've played around with the jetting and found the 75/118 combo works best.
 
Well, I synchronized the carbs again today, but I did it differently.
I drilled a hole through the frame from above, on an angle to line up with the synchronize screw between the carbs.
I made a screwdriver that is 8.5" long, and through this hole I can now adjust the synchronize screw from above without getting those red marks on my hands from a hot engine.
Made the job much nicer for sure.
It's running the best that it ever has, now maybe I can just go for a ride without making changes.

Hi.......
I decided to go for a ride, and............
During the ride the bike started to buck, sputter, kick and bark.
I was losing speed, so I tried the petcock, moving it to reserve, but I knew that I had enough gas in the tank.
I played with the choke, managing to nurse it along closer to home.
It finally stopped, so I called CAA, only to find out that it would take 20 minutes just to talk to someone.
I called my wife to let her know where I was, and asked her if she could pick me up. (She's a great Lady!)
Hung up and decided to try to bike, it started, so I head out to see if I could get home.
Only to realize that I'd told my wife where I was, and I wasn't there anymore, so...
I pulled over and called my wife to let her know what I was doing, and also what route I was taking to get home.
I managed to get it home, so now I have something else to figure out.
My gut tells me that I should check the coil pack, from the way that it was running.
Running on two, then on one, then sputtering, then nothing, then something, back and forth......
So, I'll have to figure out how to test the coils, if that is possible?
Any suggestions?

Those symptoms do sound like fuel starvation. and the fact that it started again after sitting, It could be either not enough fuel flow to bowls to keep up with engine fuel consumption. OR... Fuel cap vent issue. When you stopped did you take of the fuel cap to double check your fuel? that would have broke the vacuum and refilled the bowls.

I didn't open the tank, but fuel starvation is where I will start.
I've put 1900K on it so far with no issues, it has actuall run very well.
I recently, within the last 100K, put a new fuel petcock in the tank, I will check it to see if there is a restriction in it.
This will be my starting point.

OK...........
I just went out there to check the flow, including the filter, by leaving it in the fuel line.
the flow was slow, or it seemed to be.
so..........
I took the filter out of the line and the flow more than double.
so..............
I took the entire fuel line off, replaced the filter, hooked it up........
and..........
the flow is much better now.
I'll have to try it again, but this may be it?
I'm an ol guy, it seems to take me longer now to think things through.

It's back!
Running fine.
I did a few 8 grand shifts, just to test it ya know..........
no fuel supply issues.
It runs along at 100KPH als, which is 6 grand.
I stopped by the Honda Dealership to pick up some 6mm fuel line......
That stuff is hard to find now.
I am looking for fuel line that will allow a pinch clamp to clamp on it, and most line is too small in OD.
oh well............
The ol guy is back to roaming the Niagara Peninsula on the 1981 Honda!
man that thing is fun to ride!

Just one more thing I don't like about add on fuel filters.
Easy way to check for the cap vent being blocked is to try draining the fuel tank with the cap in place using a long hose on the petcock into a gas can. If the vent is blocked the fuel flow will stop once vacuum is achieved.
